Rare Bohemian Red Stained & Engraved-Glass Goblet with Cover

Artist: Attributed to August Böhm
Origin: Meistersdorf (Mistrovice), Bohemia
Period: Circa 1840–1850s
Material: Red Stained Clear Glass

This exquisite and rare Bohemian glass goblet with a matching cover beautifully demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship of 19th-century Bohemian glass artists.

Attributed to August Böhm, this piece showcases the artist’s mastery of glass engraving and decorative painting.

Artistic Highlights:

  • Main Theme: The goblet features a meticulously engraved depiction of a Muslim warrior, likely inspired by Arab or Ottoman culture. The figure, adorned in traditional attire with a turban, is shown mounted on horseback in combat form, charging with a spear against a natural landscape backdrop with finely engraved trees.
  • Red Staining and Engraving: The clear glass surface is enhanced with red-stained vegetal designs, including vine leaves and grapes, adding vibrant contrast and intricate detail.
  • Miniature Lens Feature: A small circular hand-cut glass disc on the opposite side of the warrior acts as a lens, allowing the viewer to see the engraved figure in miniature and with greater focus.

This goblet is not only a stunning work of art but also a reflection of the rich cultural interplay of the 19th century. The combination of glass engraving, red staining, and innovative lens design makes it a valuable addition to any collection of Bohemian glass or historical decorative art.
