Description and Design:

  • Exceptional Craftsmanship: The artist has demonstrated extraordinary skill by meticulously decorating the box on all sides, ensuring no surface is left untouched. The design features floral motifs carved within the inlaid pieces, seamlessly combined with geometric patterns, reflecting the complexity and elegance of Ottoman design.
  • Structure: The box stands on four legs and features a single chest of drawers beneath an opening top compartment.

  • Materials and Detailing:
    • The box is overlaid with thin slices of ivory, bone, and micro-mosaic beadings across the exterior, emphasizing its geometric and floral intricacy.
    • The hinged top is secured by two silver chains.

Condition

The item was crafted using natural glues and veneers, making it vulnerable to detachment or loss of pieces over time due to temperature and humidity changes. As a result, the item underwent conservation and repair in the past, using materials that closely match the original to preserve its authenticity and craftsmanship.

With age, some pieces may loosen or be lost, making periodic preservation essential to maintain the box’s integrity.

The box shows minimal wear to the plain wooden surfaces, particularly inside. The interior red polychrome paint displays light scratches and wear, and one small inner compartment lid is missing. The top lid has a slight, barely noticeable warp due to age but closes properly.

Despite minor signs of wear, the scribe’s box retains its structural integrity, aesthetic appeal, and historical significance.
